Author McNeal's fictionalized history is a treat to read. He has a keen visual sense and creates scenes of powerful imagery that make it easy to imagine seeing the story on a movie screen. At the beginning a bullet explodes from a rifle to fly across the countryside and battlefields and slaves on a plantation, dead soldiers, abandoned women staring at burning homes, and past President Lincoln at Gettysburg. It glows and ends up hitting Lincoln at the theater. Another image that stayed with me is a group of slaves disrobing and hiding in waist-deep gator-infested waters. The dogs, trained to hunt slaves, dive in after the clothing and are eaten by the alligators who leave "most" of the slaves alone. Then there is Lincoln feeding cows on the White House front lawn.McNeal doesn't leave out Sherman, Grant, Stanton, et al. and the weird Mrs. Lincoln. The author did his research and has created numerous authentic scenes.What makes this story special is not only how the historical characters interact with Lincoln and the president's Mark Twain-like humor, but the insight and wit of his fictional characters.McNeal has taken the fact that Lincoln's secretary, John Hay, liked to smoke dope and visit brothels and created a fascinating prostitute, mulatto no less, for Hay to fall for. Through Cici, Hay learns about Lincoln from the perspective of slavery and through Hay, Cici learns about Lincoln from someone who works with the president every day.The sexual trists between Hay and Cici get pretty steamy. I kept thinking of Halle Berry in the role. To say that Cici is shrewd is an understatement. "I'm half black and half white. Everybody talks to me." She's sexy and smart and in her hands Hay is Jello.This work is screenplay, not a novel. I enjoy reading screenplays and would love to see this become a film someday. We could use something new regarding Lincoln--and this is definitely new.
